If you're building a game, you're building an economy. But what’s an economy without its people? Before you design a monetisation strategy, you need to know exactly who is playing your game - and how they spend.

In free-to-play gaming, your audience falls into four buckets.

First, the Free Players (F2P). They may comprise up to 95% of your audience, depending on the genre. They might never spend a dime, but they are the lifeblood of your game. They provide the community, the matchmaking pool, and the hype.

Next are the Minnows. These players drop a few bucks here and there - maybe on a starter pack or a cheap battle pass.

Then come the Dolphins. These are your regulars. They spend moderate amounts consistently to keep their experience fresh.

Finally, the Whales. They are a tiny fraction of your player base, but they often generate the majority of your revenue. They want top-tier items, ultimate convenience, the biggest bling, and serious bragging rights.

Balancing your game to keep F2P players happy while offering real value to Minnows, Dolphins, and Whales is the secret to a game that lasts for years. Want to learn how to design monetisation systems that appeal to all four? Let me know in the comments what you want to see most, and stay tuned for more articles on this topic!
